Flama’s June is filled with Latin rhythms. We will have Latin Saturday Workshops this week on the 19th of June. Latin Saturday includes Anna’s salsa and bachata workshop as well as Mirka’s cha-cha, slow rumba and reggaeton classes. All of these workshops still have some places left, so sign up for them now!

Flama’s Latin Saturday is a day full of amazing Latin rhythms! There are five different solo classes to choose from, so now you have the opportunity to come and try different dance styles and find your own favorite!

These workshops are especially meant for beginners, so you do not have to have any prior dance experience to attend the classes. The classes are held at Dance Studio Flama (Linnankatu 84, Turku) on Saturday, the 19th of June 2021. The workshops are held by Flama’s dance teachers Anna Tolppa ja Mirka Saali.

Reggaeton is the hot dance of Latin nightclubs and streets, and it has been influenced by different dance styles, such as hip hop, dancehall reggae and the Caribbean and South American traditional dances, for example Afro dances. Reggaeton is characterized by strong dynamic fluctuations, polyrhythms, and playing with chest and hip isolation in particular. Both strong accents and soft sensual movements are present and they alternate.
The workshop is instructed by the founder of Dance Studio Flama, Anna Tolppa. Anna has danced reggaeton for ten years.

Bachata is a sensual Latin dance that comes originally from the Dominican Republic. During Bachata Solo class, you will learn about body language, styling and musicality that are essential also for couple bachata.

Commercial Dance is an urban fusion dance that combines techniques of different dance styles and looks for music video inspired bold attitude and show feeling.

Dance Fiesta is an energetic and cheerful dance class which combines movements from different dance styles, such as Latin dances, oriental dance and twerk. The movements are easy to follow and the purpose of the class is to have fun moving your body! You can come to the class without any previous dance experience. Dance Fiesta is the class of true great feeling!

The class is built around a feminine choreography that is full of self-confidence and sensual body movements combined with accents. This is the place to let your inner diva loose!

Show Heels class takes you to the super feminine world of show dance! The class is influenced by the esthetics of music videos and make you feel like Beyoncé of your own life! The goal is to develop your own expression, performance and style. Let your inner diva loose, come to have fun and bring your own heels with you to the class. Of course it is possible to dance without the heels as well.

Oriental Dance, also known as belly dance, is a soft dance style that is based on folk and female solo dances from Middle East and North Africa. The dance class focuses on the basic movements of oriental dance, its body language and the use of the head, shoulders and hands.

Pilates is a method of body conditioning created by Joseph Pilates. It is used to develop eg. optimal posture, to strengthen the middle body and to deepen breathing.

Salsa Ladies Style class is all about impressive feminine body movements and music interpretation. In addition to typical body movements and technique of salsa, the class concentrates inter alia on the use of hands and feminine impression, not forgetting show elements. Let yourself loose in all the sensuality! The class is meant for those who are already familiar with the basics of salsa solo.

Beginners’ salsa solo class takes you to the world of salsa rhythms. During the class, you will get familiar with the basic steps of salsa and we will learn about technique, body movements and rhythmics. This class is suitable for everyone!

During the street dance class, we will practice rhythmics, bouncies, steps, isolations and other characteristic features of different street dance styles. The attitude is the key, not forgetting to have fun!

Twerk is an engaging and fun dance style that has gained great popularity around the world. Its moves can be easily taken to the dance floor and probably that is why it is a common dance style at the parties. During twerk classes, you will get diversely familiar with various techniques, such as shaking, jiggle, thrusting and throwing the hip and bounce as well as some floorwork. Twerk improves physical fitness comprehensively, especially back, thigh, buttock and abdominal muscles. The twerk class are meant for over 15-year-olds.

Twerk is an effective way to work out, so by practising twerk techniques, you will simultaneously get your body in shape! The class is a combination of both training exercises and twerk techniques. The class is about sweat and fun and less attention to the choreography. This is a perfect additional training for beginners’ twerk or twerk intermediate class, but also a great choice as an independent training or to support other dance styles. The class does not require any previous twerk experience. Take knee pads or leg warmers with you to the class to protect your knees. The class is meant for over 16-year-olds.

Anna Kuparinen
Anna has a versatile dance background, since she started dancing with salsa and other Cuban dances but soon continued also with Urban dance styles, such as hip hop, reggaeton and commercial dance. Anna has danced in different dance groups both in Finland and in Australia, and she has studied and got inspiration from different countries (inter alia the USA, Australia, Japan and Germany).

In her own style, Anna combines different Urban street dance styles and often adds some Latin vibes into them. She finds the role of dynamics very important in dancing and she aims at teaching the difference between soft and sharp movements and how they can be combined in one’s own style of dancing. Anna is the choreographer of her own dance group Urban Breeze that has won inter alia silver in Glow dance competition in 2018 in adults’ Urban small group category and gold in Ladies Revolution 2018 dance competition in Barcelona.

Friday Flama party will be celebrated on Friday, the 8th of February from 9 pm to 01.30 am at Dance Studio Flama!

We will have two dance floors where salsa, bachata, reggaeton, kizomba and semba will be played late into the night. DJ Papi will play his best tunes and we will guarantee that we’re gonna have great time together!

The entrance fee is 8 / 7 € (the cheaper price by showing Flama’s valid punch card or Bailes Cubanos membership card). You can pay it by card or cash.

Remember to take your dance shoes or other indoor shoes with you because the shoes used outdoors will be left in the lobby.

Dance Studio Flama is located next to Turku Castle at Linnankatu 84. Bus Line 1 (Market Square–Turku Harbor) will stop just in front of Flama at the bus stop called Satamakatu and the bus trip from market square to the dance studio takes around 10 minutes. Check the bus schedule at to choose the right time to come. If you decide to come by your own car, there are free parking spaces behind the dance studio and other parking options nearby, such as chargeable parking lots or ones requiring a parking disk.

CARIBBEAN PARTY Caribbean Party Class offers a party in the Caribbean style! We will enjoy Caribbean music and body movements of soca, dancehall, salsa, reggaeton etc. We will turn the music on, set all the worries aside and just let the rhythm take us along. In the beginning of the class, we will mainly have series of steps straight to the music, after which we will create a longer choreography towards the end of the class. This class will certainly make you sweat!

SEXY REGGAETON Reggaeton is a genre of music and dance originating from Cuba and Puerto Rico and it is nowadays the most popular dance style in South and Mid America, especially among the youth. Reggaeton is characterized by strong dynamic fluctuations, polyrhythm and playing with isolation.

WHO IS ELINA VALTONEN? Elina has worked as a dance artist in ten different countries. Most recently, she worked for one and a half years in an Afro-Caribbean contemporary dance company in Canada. Alongside North America, she has also been able to tour the Caribbean. As a result, multiculturalism is one of the greatest sources of her inspiration and Elina loves holistic, sweaty and animal dance. Her passion is to combine Afro and Western body movements. Elina is, in her own words, “passionate about sharing the liberating message of the dance that directs us towards the truth”.
