Contemporary dance is an “umbrella style” that refers to many different dance styles. Contemporary dance has been influenced by various types of art and our contemporary classes combine elements of both contemporary and jazz dance, having the focus especially on finding the right flow of the movement as well as taking advantage of the gravity while moving. We will get familiar with floorwork and do moving routines to varying and compelling music. The classes contain instructed improvisation exercises that will release one’s own creativity. At the end of the class, we will practice a choreography combining everything learnt earlier.

Teacher: Pauliina Latva

Pauliina is a dancer and a dance teacher who will soon also graduate as a physiotherapist (The University of Applied Sciences). Pauliina has practiced various dance styles, such as contemporary dance, show dance, hip hop, breakdance, acrobatics as well as salsa. Her strength is that she utilizes the techniques of different dance styles, regardless of the dance style in question. She spent her autumn 2016 in New York studying dance independently, in addition to which she has developed herself as a dancer through various courses and workshops both in Finland and abroad, for example in London, New York, and Los Angeles. Pauliina is also a Personal Trainer (TYA/South Africa).

As a teacher, Pauliina is inspiring and encouraging. Her dance classes are filled with versatile dance know-how and good feeling, and typically different dance styles are open-mindedly combined. Her classes teach you how to listen to the music and interpret it with your own body movements. “During my dance classes, I want to create an open and safe space where one can learn through experimentation and shared insights! My main job as a dance teacher is to motivate others to become interested in the versatility of their own bodies and the opportunities they create.”

Dance has taken Meri all over the place: it all started with Loimaan Naisvoimistelijat and their annual spring performances and through both national and international basketball leagues, she finally made her way to Twerk Finnish National Championships. Meri has dance experience in show dance, hip hop, Cuban Latin dances as well as some ballet but in recent years the love of her life has been twerk that is also nowadays her primary dance style. In twerk Meri is fascinated by its physicality, roughness and challenging techniques. According to her, the best thing in twerk is that it allows one to do an extremely hard workout and simultaneously praise one’s own body. In addition to twerk, Meri’s heart is also taken by Dancehall Queenstyle and Latin dances. However, you can find Meri in any dance classes, since her training policy says that different dance styles let one develop into a versatile dancer, and each dance style can provide something new to one’s own style.

As a teacher, Meri is a relaxed type, but she urges and encourages her students always to do their best. Her classes are filled with laughter and humor – not forgetting hard training. Meri thinks that the best thing in her classes is absolutely to see how people go beyond themselves and do something they could not even believed to be possible. Everyone can come to the classes just the way they are, regardless of the size of the butt.

At Flama, Meri works as a twerk and reggaeton teacher and leads the dance studio’s own dance group, Bouncy Crew.

Twerk is an engaging and fun dance style that has gained great popularity around the world. Its moves can be easily taken to the dance floor and probably that is why it is a common dance style at the parties. During twerk classes, you will get diversely familiar with various techniques, such as shaking, jiggle, thrusting and throwing the hip and bounce as well as some floorwork. In the beginning of the class, we will have a warm-up, after which we will go through some basic movements. The rest of the class is reserved for the choreography. Twerk improves physical fitness comprehensively, especially back, thigh, buttock and abdominal muscles.

Amazing Jamaican dancehall teacher and dancer Kaytii Insanity will visit Flama on December 15!
