19:00–20:00 Pre-Party Workshop: Couple Salsa, intermediate 60 min, 17 € (the price includes the entrance to the dance party), the entrance fee alone without the pre-party class is 10 €

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Salsa con Rumba (solo)
We are combining the energetic dynamics of salsa with several moves and styles of Cuban rumba at an upbeat tempo!

Cuban Salsa Styling (solo and couple classes)
Add more styling to the salsa! Tricks, variations and stylizations, for those who already know the foundations and the basic technique of salsa

Rueda Flow
Combinations and movement types that keep the rueda flowing The class is suitable for those who have mastered the basics of the rueda (e.g. dame, enchufla etc.). Rueda (rueda de casino) is a style of salsa where pairs of couple salsa dancers form a circle and the dance partners change constantly, even in the middle of dance figures.

Son (couple class)
Son is an elegant Cuban music and dance style that is often called as “the mother of salsa”, as Cuban salsa has provided the basis for Cuban salsa. Son is considered to have developed from changüí music, which was a mixture of Spanish canción and African rhythm music. Son is danced with a different rhythm from salsa. Son is a more relaxed couple dance than salsa, based on the gentle movements of the body. Finding the right style and technique in son is often more challenging than in salsa. Based on things familiar from salsa, the workshop jumps into the rhythm of son and the connection between the leaders and followers. The Couple Son class is suitable for those who have danced Couple Salsa before.

Matias Löyttyniemi

Matias found Cuban dancing at the age of 14, and for the last ten years he has been teaching and performing all over Finland. The closest to his heart is the relationship between dance and music, and he has convoyed it both in traditional dance classes and in his lectures meant for dancers. The connection between the couple is another important theme for him, not only in leading and following but also in the body movements, in the dialogue of dance and in its playfullness. It is important to Matias that the technique takes you to the actual practice and you get to enjoy dancing.

In 2012, Matias started studying musicology at the University of Helsinki, with his main interests being the relationship between music and culture, identities and dance, especially in the context of Cuban music and dance. Since then, his studies and dance teaching have grown together, and many themes from both musicology and education have become part of his pedagogy.
