Cuban Afro: Orishas

Orishas are divine powers and spiritual beings in the Yoruba religion. Each orisha has its own power of nature, character, color, and role (e.g., ruler of the sea, wind, metal, or love), as well as its own dance movements and rhythm. The Yoruba dance tradition originated in West Africa, particularly Nigeria, and was brought to Cuba by slaves in the 16th–19th centuries. The course teaches the basic movements, rhythms, and symbolism of different orishas.

The orishas danced during the course include Elegguá, Changó, Obatalá, Oyá, Yemayá, Ochún, and Ogún.
