Show Burlesque

Want to tell others?

Show Burlesque classes are show dance classes filled with feminine expression that draw inspiration from the world of burlesque art.

Burlesque is an art form that combines elements of dance, theatre, circus, performance art and striptease. Almost anything can happen in burlesque. The performances often involve striptease, but the main emphasis is on the word ‘tease’. Burlesque performances often construct stories or narratives through interaction between audience and performers, balancing eroticism and humour. The aesthetics of burlesque performances are often spectacular and whimsical: for example the revelry of fans, tulle boas and sparkling rhinestones. In burlesque, the essential element is joy – enjoying life and one’s own body as well as sexuality, not taking life too seriously.

In burlesque, body image is diverse: bodies of different sizes and ages are seen as magnificent and powerful. Many people think of contemporary burlesque as being about empowering femininity and women’s sexual autonomy. However, these characteristics can be extended to other areas of self-expression, identity and other genders. The world of burlesque is therefore very diverse. There can be men, drag queens and androgynous characters on stage. Burlesque is often also political and opinionated. And above all, burlesque is changing.

You can dance with your socks or toe pads, we do not recommend that you wear any dance sneakers in these classes. Normal comfortable clothes are fine. However, you can definitely wear something approriated to the theme if you feel like (e.g. fishnet tights). If you have sensitive knees, it is a good idea to bring your own knee pads or leg warmers with you, because sometimes the movements include floorwork.
