Description

Quick start to Lavatanssi

Come take your first steps into the world of Lavatanssi in Flama’s relaxed and encouraging atmosphere! Over the course of two hours, we’ll cover the basics of the foxtrot and the single swing: you’ll learn the basic steps, the most common easy figures, and the fundamentals of leading and following. You’ll also get a feel for the rhythm of couple dancing, how to use the space, and how to move smoothly with others on the dance floor.

“Lavatanssit” is a traditional Finnish summer evening activity. People get dressed up, go out, and dance the summer evening away, moving counterclockwise around a dance pavilion as the band plays old favourites and new.

The foxtrot is a cornerstone of Finnish Lavatanssi culture—a smooth, flowing, and versatile dance performed to the rhythm of older Finnish hit songs and more laid-back pop music. Single swing, on the other hand, is a more cheerful and energetic style, featuring flexible and rhythmic movements. Single swing is often danced to faster pop music and swing-inspired tunes, bringing a playful variety to the dance floor.

The quick start to Lavatanssi also covers the customs and etiquette of Lavatanssi dancing, so you’ll feel confident hitting the dance floor. The goal is that, after this class, you’ll feel confident heading out to summer dance halls to enjoy the music, movement, and dancing with others, as well as to learn more through hands-on experience.
