Heels, beginenrs (5 sessions), Wednesdays 3.6.–1.7. at 17.15–18.10, instructed by Meri Niemi

Would you like to learn how to dance in heels? In this course, you’ll get to practice heel-dancing techniques from the very basics and perform simple choreography in heels. By the end of the course, you’ll feel more confident walking and dancing in heels and will be able to identify the basic elements of heel-dancing technique.

You do not need any previous experience in heel dancing to participate in this course. However, it would be beneficial to have some dance experience in other styles, as heels add an extra challenge to the training. If you have no previous dance experience, we recommend starting with a beginner’s course in another dance style.

Description

What if I can’t participate every week?

Absences from classes can be made up during the same term in any other class or drop-in session. This way, no dance session will be wasted! Read more.

What should I bring with me?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and feel good.

For heels classes, we recommend high heels with ankle support. The best option for heels technique is a thin stiletto heel, but you can also dance in thicker heels. The sole of the shoe should be thin but firm, so a platform sole is not the best choice. However, do not stress about the shoes! However, please make sure that the soles of your dance shoes are clean and the heel caps are intact so that the floor of the hall is not damaged. Bring a water bottle with you as well.

Heels

The beginner’s course in heels introduces the basic elements of heels technique, such as walking, weight transfer, and alignment, with the aim of learning to dance in heels naturally and confidently. The classes begin with a varied warm-up, followed by practicing different techniques, such as walking and floor exercises. Towards the end of the class, you will learn simple, varied choreography that allows you to feel the fluidity of the movements and practice the techniques you have learned.

Meri Niemi

Meri is a dance teacher from Turku whose classes are filled with laughter and humor while training at full speed. Meri believes that working out and having fun do not exclude one another, on the contrary, the more fun dance classes are, the more likely we are to keep coming back to our hobby time and time again. When dancing, Meri is primarily interested in and inspired by the use of different energies and delving deeper into the qualities of movement. As an instructor she is a relaxed, but encourages dancers to always do their best in the moment – listening to their own bodies. Meri often receives praise from her students for her encouraging, positive energy and her clear and calm teaching style, which makes it easy even for beginners to keep up with the class. A motto often heard in Merin’s classes is that the moves or choreography don’t matter—it’s all about attitude. Everyone is welcome to Meri’s dance classes just as they are. No matter the style, the focus is on discovering and nurturing your own unique way of moving.

“Come to class exactly as you are today, and move in the way that feels right for you today!”

Meri teaches twerk and reggaeton at Flama, and occasionally also commercial dance classes. You may also spot her at the front desk or replying to your emails, as in addition to teaching, Meri works in the studio’s office.
