Learn to listen to salsa and timba in a new way! Lectured by Jani Lehtioksa.
Do you know the feeling when you can’t find the beats to dance to in Cuban music? You’re not alone. The problem is not a lack of rhythm, but the European way of listening to African rhythms, on which salsa music is based.
When most of the emphasis of the rhythmic patterns falls elsewhere than on the pulse or dance steps, the European listener’s “map” is in danger of being “turned upside down”.
Cubans have a fundamentally different approach to rhythm than Europeans. When you learn to listen to the rhythm the way they do, you suddenly make sense of the music in a completely different way.
Rhythm workshop
An hour and a half of rhythm class will program the ear to listen to music in a new way. Through helpful examples, you will understand the difference between European and Cuban rhythm, and learn how to turn your own ear to the Cuban frequency.
Jani Lehtiokas’ lectures are hilariously fun and relaxed. He is able to deconstruct the Cuban concept of rhythm by explaining it in popular terms and playing examples.
During the lecture we will also do some easy rhythm exercises together. All exercises are done sitting on chairs, you don’t need to bring your workout clothes.
