On Saturday, the 15th of October, there will be an intermediate Twerk with Heels workshop! The teacher of the workshop is\u00a0Meri Niemi<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You can participate in the workshop with your own sturdy heels or you can dance without heels. This workshop is meant for those who have been dancing twerk or with heels before.<\/p>\n

Bring also knee pads or for example leg warmers with you to protect your knees. The workshop is meant for over 16-year-olds.<\/p>\n

Twerk<\/a><\/h2>\n

The twerk, which has gained great popularity in the world, focuses on the movements of the pelvic area. Twerk has its roots in various African American and African dances, including mapouka, baikoko, niko and chakacha. With slavery, the dances associated with the cultural traditions of different countries, cultures, and tribes in Africa have become mixed, and the roots of the twerk cannot be associated with the dances of just one region or cultural heritage. The concept of Twerk was introduced in the late 80\u2019s, e.g. in the context of the bounce hip hop trend in New Orleans.<\/p>\n

Meri Niemi<\/a><\/h2>\n

Flama\u2019s own TwerkMama Meri is such an energy bomb who is originally from Loimaa but has already lived in Turku for several years.<\/p>\n

Dance has taken Meri all over the place: it all started with Loimaan Naisvoimistelijat and their annual spring performances and through both national and international basketball leagues, she finally made her way to Twerk Finnish National Championships. Meri has dance experience in show dance, hip hop, Cuban Latin dances as well as some ballet, but in recent years the love of her life has been twerk that is also nowadays her primary dance style. In twerk, Meri is fascinated by its physicality, roughness and challenging techniques. According to her, the best thing in twerk is that it allows one to do an extremely hard workout and simultaneously praise one\u2019s own body. In addition to twerk, Meri\u2019s heart is also taken by Dancehall Queenstyle and Latin dances. However, you can find Meri in any dance classes, since her training policy is that different dance styles let one develop into a versatile dancer, and each dance style can provide something new to one\u2019s own style.<\/p>\n

As a teacher, Meri is a relaxed type, but she urges and encourages her students always to do their best. Her classes are filled with laughter and humor \u2013 not forgetting hard training. Meri thinks that the best thing in her classes is absolutely to see how people go beyond themselves and do something they could not even believed to be possible. Everyone can come to the classes just the way they are, regardless of the size of the butt.<\/p>\n

At Flama, Meri works as a twerk teacher and dances in the dance studio\u2019s own dance group, Bouncy Crew. In her free time, Meri can be most likely found on the dance floor of a bar or just enjoying life with her friends.<\/p>\n
