Twerk has its roots in various African American and African dances, including mapouka, baikoko, niko and chakacha. With slavery, the dances associated with the cultural traditions of different countries, cultures, and tribes in Africa have become mixed, and the roots of the twerk cannot be associated with the dances of just one region or cultural heritage.
