Twerk

The twerk, which has gained great popularity in the world, focuses on the movements of the pelvic area. Twerk has its roots in various African American and African dances, including mapouka, baikoko, niko and chakacha. With slavery, the dances associated with the cultural traditions of different countries, cultures, and tribes in Africa have become mixed, and the roots of the twerk cannot be associated with the dances of just one region or cultural heritage. The concept of Twerk was introduced in the late 80’s, e.g. in the context of the bounce hip hop trend in New Orleans.

Twerk moves can be easily taken to the dance floor and probably that is why it is a commonly seen at the parties. During twerk classes, you will get diversely familiar with various techniques, such as shaking, jiggle, thrusting and throwing the hip and bounce as well as some floorwork. At the beginning of the classes, we will have a warm-up, after which we will go through some basic movements. The rest of the class is reserved for the choreography. Twerk improves physical fitness comprehensively, especially back, thigh, buttock and abdominal muscles.

Meri Niemi

Flama’s own TwerkMama Meri is such an energy bomb who is originally from Loimaa but has already lived in Turku for several years.

Dance has taken Meri all over the place: it all started with Loimaan Naisvoimistelijat and their annual spring performances and through both national and international basketball leagues, she finally made her way to Twerk Finnish National Championships. Meri has dance experience in show dance, hip hop, Cuban Latin dances as well as some ballet, but in recent years the love of her life has been twerk that is also nowadays her primary dance style. In twerk, Meri is fascinated by its physicality, roughness and challenging techniques. According to her, the best thing in twerk is that it allows one to do an extremely hard workout and simultaneously praise one’s own body. In addition to twerk, Meri’s heart is also taken by Dancehall Queenstyle and Latin dances. However, you can find Meri in any dance classes, since her training policy is that different dance styles let one develop into a versatile dancer, and each dance style can provide something new to one’s own style.

As a teacher, Meri is a relaxed type, but she urges and encourages her students always to do their best. Her classes are filled with laughter and humor – not forgetting hard training. Meri thinks that the best thing in her classes is absolutely to see how people go beyond themselves and do something they could not even believed to be possible. Everyone can come to the classes just the way they are, regardless of the size of the butt.

At Flama, Meri works as a twerk teacher and dances in the dance studio’s own dance group, Bouncy Crew. In her free time, Meri can be most likely found on the dance floor of a bar or just enjoying life with her friends.

KIZOMBA
Kizomba music and dance were created in Angola in early 1980s when zouk, the popular music in the Caribbean, came to Angola and mixed with semba. Kizomba means a partyin Kimbundu language. In its country of origin, it is traditionally danced for example at weddings and at other parties. Kizomba is a social dance that is characterized by a close proximity and the lower body concentrated ginga, the body movement. Similar to tango, leading and following are done with the upper body and less with hands (compared to salsa). After its arrival in Europe, kizomba has developed into new styles, such as urbankizz and kizomba fusion.

SEMBA

Semba is a fast-paced, fun couple dance. Semba has a long tradition in Angola, in its country of origin, and it has influenced other genres of music and dance, for example kizomba. The essential characteristics of semba include hooks, low liftings, the leader’s footwork and various tricks. In Dance Studio Flama, we start with the basics of semba and concentrate on the most important aspect: having fun!

CARLOS CAMBA

Carlos Camba is from Angola and he has been teaching kizomba and semba in Finland since 2014. Carlos has studied dancing with several international dance teachers and developed his skills especially in Angola. During his classes, Carlos concentrates on developing basic techniques and body movements, especially the use of the hip. It is important to him that all the knowledge learnt during the classes can be applied to actual social dances.

Carlos finds it important to have a good relationship with his students. Humor blossoms in his classes. He highlights that everyone, who is motivated to learn, is warmly welcome to his classes, regardless of age or sex.

Carlos teaches both kizomba and semba in Dance Studio Flama. He gives the classes with his dance instructor assistant, Ida Koho, who has worked as an assistant for several teachers and has been trained by several international female dance teachers in Europe and in Angola.

ANNA
Anna has been dancing different dance styles since she was a teenager and she has taught dancehall for several years before switching to kizomba and semba.

Anna has learned kizomba and semba from Angolan dance teachers in both Europe and Angola. She travels regularly to Angola to learn more about dance and culture where they have been born. It is very important to her to teach kizomba and semba in their most authentic forms while respecting the culture.
