What is the dance class like?
This is a dance class designed for kids. During the class, we will explore the world of dance inspired by games and stories. Most importantly, we will have fun as a group. The classes improve sense of rhythm, body control, flexibility, coordination and memory. The goal is to find the joy of dance and movement!

The class is instructed by Ida Martikainen.
Ida is a present and gentle dance instructor who loves bodily expression. She has completed Basic Education in the Art of Dance between 2004–2013 in Jyväskylä Dance Institute, majoring in classical ballet and having contemporary dance, jazz dance and repertoire dance as her minors. In addition, she has been involved in several dance projects both as a dancer and as a choreographer.

Elina Valtonen, our beloved visiting dance artist and teacher, will have her dance workshops at Flama on Saturday, the 2nd of January!

Schedule on Saturday, the 2nd of January 2021
12:00–13:30 Reggaeton, beginners (90 min)
13:45–15:15 Reggaeton, intermediate level (90 min)

The price of a 90 min workshop is 20 €. Both of these workshops are already full but by sending an email to, you can be notified about possible cancellation places.

Reggaeton is a genre of music and dance originating from Panama, Puerto Rico, and Cuba and it is nowadays the most popular dance style in South and Mid America, especially among the youth. Reggaeton is characterized by strong dynamic fluctuations, polyrhythm, and playing with isolation.

Elina has worked as a dance artist in ten different countries. Most recently, she worked for one and a half years in an Afro-Caribbean contemporary dance company in Canada. Alongside North America, she has also been able to tour the Caribbean. As a result, multiculturalism is one of the greatest sources of her inspiration and Elina loves holistic, sweaty, and animal dance. Her passion is to combine Afro and Western body movements.
Elina is, in her own words, “passionate about sharing the liberating message of the dance that directs us towards the truth”.

Johanna and Omar are versatile and experienced dancers and teachers and they teach i.a. bachata, cha cha, kizomba and salsa together. Through their I Dance Helsinki -organization, Omar and Johanna have long been building the Afro-Latin scene in Helsinki by teaching, bringing visiting artists to Finland and arranging festivals and parties in a weekly basis.

Johanna has danced several different dance styles. Johanna won Salsa European Championship in 2010, so she has a lot of knowledge about dance technique and that knowledge she wants to share with her students. As a teacher, she is known for her demanding but encouraging and clear teaching.

Omar’s dancing career has begun with ballroom dance, but it changed later to Afro-Latin dances. Omar’s strengths are musicality as well as his smooth and clear lead. He encourages and provides tools for each individual student’s progress and improvement.

For Omar and Johanna, it is important that everything learnt during the classes can be applied in a social dance setting. They emphasize the importance of leading and following as well as the learning of the basics, not forgetting musicality. Above all, dancing should be fun and feel good.
