Dance has taken Meri all over the place: it all started with Loimaan Naisvoimistelijat and their annual spring performances and through both national and international basketball leagues, she finally made her way to Twerk Finnish National Championships. Meri has dance experience in show dance, hip hop, Cuban Latin dances as well as some ballet but in recent years the love of her life has been twerk that is also nowadays her primary dance style. In twerk Meri is fascinated by its physicality, roughness and challenging techniques. According to her, the best thing in twerk is that it allows one to do an extremely hard workout and simultaneously praise one’s own body. In addition to twerk, Meri’s heart is also taken by Dancehall Queenstyle and Latin dances. However, you can find Meri in any dance classes, since her training policy says that different dance styles let one develop into a versatile dancer, and each dance style can provide something new to one’s own style.

As a teacher, Meri is a relaxed type, but she urges and encourages her students always to do their best. Her classes are filled with laughter and humor – not forgetting hard training. Meri thinks that the best thing in her classes is absolutely to see how people go beyond themselves and do something they could not even believed to be possible. Everyone can come to the classes just the way they are, regardless of the size of the butt.

At Flama, Meri works as a twerk and reggaeton teacher and leads the dance studio’s own dance group, Bouncy Crew.

Twerk is an engaging and fun dance style that has gained great popularity around the world. Its moves can be easily taken to the dance floor and probably that is why it is a common dance style at the parties. During twerk classes, you will get diversely familiar with various techniques, such as shaking, jiggle, thrusting and throwing the hip and bounce as well as some floorwork. In the beginning of the class, we will have a warm-up, after which we will go through some basic movements. The rest of the class is reserved for the choreography. Twerk improves physical fitness comprehensively, especially back, thigh, buttock and abdominal muscles.

12.00-13.15 Barre, suitable for everyone

Adult Ballet:
During the adult ballet class, we go through classical ballet technique, practise ballet-specific expression and some choreographic phrases towards the end of the class. The classe cover barre exercises, centre practice and free routines. Ballet develops internal abdominal muscles and improves balance, coordination and posture. In addition, the expressive ability of the body will gain new dimensions. The adult ballet class creates a common space in which we can, at a gentle pace, combine practice and fun. Relaxed, cheerful and bright dancing, but still keeping the main focus.

Barre class is a hybrid workout class – combining ballet-inspired moves with elements of Pilates, dance, yoga and strength training. Barre workouts are intensely focused on improving core strength, developing the stabilizing muscles of the shoulder and hip girdles, and enhancing flexibility.

You don’t need any dance experience for this class.

Ida Martikainen:

Ida is a present and gentle dance instructor who loves bodily expression. She has completed Basic Education in the Art of Dance between 2004–2013, majoring in classical ballet and having contemporary dance, jazz dance and repertoire dance as her minors. In addition, she has been involved in several dance projects both as a dancer and as a choreographer.

According to Ida, dancing is a journey to one’s own body and in the way to attach to a common space. She thinks that the most important element of the dance class is to stay present in the same place and time: the momentary synchronization and the common sense of the bodies. Through her teaching, Ida wants to get the dancers to feel their bodies powerful and bright.
